Santorini & Athens

Santorini & Athens
Santorini

We both knew we wanted to honeymoon in Greece; we really didn’t spend time exploring other destinations. We were eager to discover the Greek islands for its beautiful white-washed homes, Mediterranean views and warm climate. We were sure of a few things - we wanted to relax; and we wanted to experience amazing dinners and the Greek culture in the most authentic way.

Our honeymoon was orchestrated by a Virtuoso travel agent and friend, Hannah Roth of Where To Next travel agency who curated our 10-day honeymoon itinerary to Mykonos, Santorini, and Athens.

10-DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1: Arrive in Mykonos - read our full Mykonos itinerary with more extensive details for days 1-4
DAY 2: Beach day in Mykonos
DAY 3: Kayaking in Mykonos
DAY 4: Mykonos beaches and visit a winery
DAY 5: Depart for Santorini via the Ferry. We highly recommend the first-class ferry ticket - the comfortable seats and lounge are well-worth the extra $20 USD per ticket. Arrive at Kapari Natural Resort and enjoy dinner at Kapari Wine Bar.
DAY 6: Experience a day cruise on a Catamaran to see the caldera, experience hot springs, and snorkel. Meander to dinner at Aktaion.
DAY 7: We had plans to explore Santorini via a Private Tour (unfortunately we had food poisoning - avoid the dairy on the the catamaran).
DAY 8: Explore Megalochori’s shops and churches. Get your photos taken professionally by Flytographer with beautiful white-wash houses as your backdrop (use the code SNVINING for $25 off your photos). Enjoy your final night on the island at a breathtaking dinner at Lycabettus in Oia.
DAY 9: Fly to Athens. Check-in to The New Hotel. Enjoy a guided tour by bus of Athens, the Parthenon and Acropolis Museum. Stroll through the Plaka market to pick-up keepsakes. Walk to dinner at Tzitzikas and Mermigas.
DAY 10: Fly Home or stay another day.

WHERE TO STAY:

Kapari Natural Resort (Santorini)- if you appreciate really unique hotels and resorts, you’ll love this resort in the center of the island, with 14 suites overlooking the caldera. It’s one of National Geographic’s “Unique Lodges of The World”. The team here was so sweet to take care of us when we fell ill.

The New Hotel (Athens)- A hotel that’s been given new life in Athens - The New Hotel salvaged every piece of material from the previous hotel here and repurposed it into art throughout the hotel. Plus, their staff is so kind.

Dinner at Lycabettus

Dinner at Lycabettus

WHERE TO EAT:

Aktaion (Santorini) - The restaurant is little and at an iconic location in the town of Firostefani. It’s walkable from Firostefani and Imerovigli. It’s been open from 1922 and it’s no mystery why - the food is so good. We kept ordering the fried feta cheese balls with tomato chutney on repeat.

Kapari Wine Restaurant (Santorini) - Named one of the best restaurants on the island at the time, Kapari is very intimate. There were 4 or so tables tucked on the side of the cliffside. It was extremely windy which can happen so bring a light sweater.

Lycabettus (Santorini) - one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life based on the ambiance and the setting. This restaurant in Oia protrudes on a cliff overlooking the ocean.

Tzitzikas and Mermigas (Athens) - We came here as a result of being undressed for dinner at a nearby rooftop (so investigate the dress code before going, including sandals). It ended up being one of the most authentic meals of our trip. It’s truly a place where the locals go and we were finally able to try moussaka (one of Greece’s national dishes which tends to sell out quickly in restaurants).

Santorini is beautiful and romantic. It can be very touristy during the day and super quiet at night; we went in September. If we were planning a trip back to Greece, we would opt to visit other islands - each island is unique and different from the other. If you happen to planning a trip to any of there other Greek islands, we discovered our resort in Mykonos (which we adored) is a part of a collection of resorts in Greece.
